Rudiger sends Kepa message after “serious” training ground bust-up

2 min read

Antonio Rudiger has reaffirmed his friendship with Chelsea teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga after the pair were involved in a bust-up last weekend.

The furious exchange between defender Rudiger and goalkeeper Kepa resulted in the former being removed from training at the club’s Cobham base on Sunday.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admitted the incident was a “serious” one on multiple occasions as he addressed the press earlier this week.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was serious,” said the German manager. “Sometimes you have little, little, little situations where you maybe look away and let them sort things out alone. This was not the case.

“We needed to interfere, we needed to interfere in the situation so the situation was serious.

“But how the guys themselves handled the situation was also impressive and also showed a lot of character. But the situation was serious.”

Despite Tuchel’s concern, relations between Rudiger and Kepa appear to have been mended entirely, as they shared a heartfelt social media exchange late on Thursday.

“Mi Hermano (my brother),” Germany international Rudiger wrote on Instagram as he posted a picture of him and his Spanish teammate embracing.

Rudiger added a heart emoji, while Kepa soon responded with three blue hearts of his own.

Chelsea were thrashed 5-2 at home by West Brom on Saturday but the mood at Stamford Bridge has improved massively since then, as the Blues ran out 2-0 winners over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday.

This hands the west Londoners a commanding advantage heading into the second leg of the quarter-final next week.

Tuchel was especially delighted by how his players bounced back from their humbling by the Baggies and said: “It was our first response after our first loss together and I am very happy with the result.”

He added: “The players know very well what they did today and they need to do it again on Tuesday.”
