Chelsea vs Real Madrid in ‘small’ doubt with ESL chief Perez left furious

2 min read

Chelsea could still be thrown out of the Champions League and have their semi-final clash against Real Madrid scrapped, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has claimed.

The Blues were the first club to signal their intent to leave the breakaway league on Tuesday night.

The other five Premier League clubs then followed suit, though Madrid are yet to withdraw.

Madrid president Florentino Perez still believes in the project, though his involvement could see his own club thrown out of the current Champions League.

Perez had agreed to become the president of the new breakaway league, with other club owners from around Europe taking a role.

UEFA chief Ceferin confirmed, via Marca, that there’s still a chance that next week’s final four clash will be scrapped.

He said: “The key is that this season has already started, so broadcasters would come at us for damages if we don’t play the semi-finals.

“So, there’s a relatively small possibility that this match isn’t played next week.

“But, things could be a little different in the future.”

Madrid president Florentino Perez has always remained adamant that any teams involved in the breakaway league won’t be punished.

He insisted that there’s no way any team can be punished, though admitted he is concerned about potential punishment from UEFA.

Perez responded to Ceferin by saying: “I’m not afraid of retaliation from Uefa, but I’m worried.

“The president said on Financial Fair Play that it was necessary to protect those who financially support their teams. Everyone interprets it as they want.

“We had prepared for everyone from every place to speak. We were killed with terrible aggression.”
