Virgil van Dijk has a new role to play at Euro 2020 this summer – despite the fact that he remains out injured.

The Dutchman will not see one minute of action on the pitch as he looks to regain full fitness ahead of next season.

Liverpool’s main man at the back was ruled out for the entire campaign after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage back in October.

With the Reds looking to defend their Premier League title, it was a mammoth blow to Jurgen Klopp’s ambitions.

It took a late rally to land a spot in the top four to secure Champions League football for another season.

Virgil van Dijk has been given an unofficial role at the Euro 2020

But with Van Dijk approaching a recovery date, the centre-back ruled himself out of any international competition for the summer to concentrate on his fitness.

However, he will still be involved in Euro 2020.

According to the Mirror, Netherlands manager Frank de Boer has asked Van Dijk to become an unofficial member of his backroom staff.

The 29-year-old is seen as such a positive influence around the camp, and that his presence and leadership would be sorely missed without him there.

The former Southampton star became the captain of his national side in 2018 but his role will not be confined to ‘cheerleading’.

Virgil van Dijk was giving advice to his Holland teammates as they played Scotland midweek

But De Boer said: “Virgil is so important for this squad and is a massive motivational factor who has always been important for the boys over the past few years. The team loves his presence.”

The 38-cap star was present for Holland’s 2-2 draw with Scotland this week.

Astonishingly, Van Dijk has never appeared at a major international tournament and, as he turns 30 in July, time is running out.

The Euros were his target this summer to return to action after being named in Liverpool’s Champions League squad in the hope that he could recover in time before the season ended.

But since then, it has been decided to write the season off and go fresh next term rather than risk any further problems that can happen with such a serious injury.
