AC Milan have unexpectedly signed former Juventus goalkeeper Antonio Mirante on a deal until the end of the season following a “chance meeting” at the club’s headquarters.

No 1 goalkeeper Mike Maignan is expected to be out for two to three months with a wrist injury, which forced the Italian giants to act quickly and sign a goalkeeper.

Ciprian Tatarusanu was the club’s only recognised back-up goalkeeper as Alessandro Plizzari is also facing a spell on the sidelines.

Mirante started his career at Juventus, where he made seven appearances for the Old Lady, before playing for the likes of Sampdoria, Parma, Bologna and Roma.

Speaking about his client’s transfer, Mirante’s agent Gabriele Giuffrida explained that Milan’s pursuit of the 38-year-old came about by a stroke of luck.

“There had been no previous contacts, it happened unexpectedly,” Giuffrida told Italian outlet CalcioMercato.com.

“Bad luck for Milan due to Maignan’s injury, but positive for Mirante who had long dreamed of playing for the Rossoneri.

“How did it come about? It was a chance meeting at Milan’s headquarters, and ten minutes before the news of the injury of Maignan arrived,” he said.

Stefano Pioli’s contract expires at the end of the season and Guiffrida, who also happens to be the Milan boss’ agent, discussed the manager’s contract situation.

“It is natural that we talk about his contract, but let’s not force things and let them evolve in a normal way,” he said.

“Such exponential growth was not expected, but at the same time Stefano told me that it is gradual. And we hope it will last a long time, that we are only halfway there.”

Pioli’s side are currently unbeaten and second in Serie A, two points behind leaders Napoli, who have a 100 per cent record in the league so far this season.

Mirante could be in line to make his debut for Milan against Hellas Verona on Saturday.
