British sprint star Dina Asher-Smith has pulled out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to a hamstring injury she sustained at last week’s World Track Championships.

Asher-Smith, 26, announced in a social media post on Wednesday that she has suffered a “light hamstring strain” after pulling up during the women’s 4×100 metre relay in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday.

She had been scheduled to represent Team England at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which begin on Thursday, but will no longer be fit to take part.

She said in an Instagram post: “Thankfully I’ve only got a light hamstring strain after pulling up in the 4×1 a few days ago! No major issues and nothing to worry about.

“I feel good but I’m in need of a few days off. But due to the short turn around between the end of Worlds and the start of the Commonwealth Games in a few days’ time. I’m going to have to withdraw.

“I was so excited to race in front of a home crowd and all the British fans. It’s going to be such an amazing competition and I know that Team England will do you all proud.

“I’m looking forward to representing you all throughout the rest of the summer and wishing the best of luck to all of my teammates.”

Former 200m world champion Asher-Smith had been enjoying a successful championship last week before sustaining the injury, winning bronze in a fast-paced women’s 200m and finishing fourth in the women’s 100m despite matching the British record.

Asher-Smith did not say if she would be fit for the European Athletics Championships, which will take place in Munich, Germany, between Aug. 15-21.
