Divisional rankings — Micaela Lujan keeps her spot at 115; Ramla Ali makes history

Divisional rankings -- Micaela Lujan keeps her spot at 115; Ramla Ali makes history

Micaela Lujan defended her IBF junior bantamweight belt in a majority-decision win over Irma Garcia in Argentina. The 95-95, 97-93, 98-92 decision was Lujan’s second title defense and toughest fight to date.

Lujan appeared to be the aggressor for the majority of the fight but Garcia (21-5-1, 4 KO) did enough to at least make the fight close. It’s the third time in her last four fights Lujan has had split or majority cards in a decision, with a split-decision win over Debora Vanesa Gomez to win the IBF title and a majority draw against Jorgelina Guanini in 2019 — the first time she fought for the IBF crown.

The next step for Lujan (11-1-1, 3 KO), who remains at No. 4 in the junior bantamweight rankings, should be to fight outside Argentina, which she hasn’t done in her last six fights. She told ESPN earlier this year eventually she would like to fight in the United States.

In non-title junior featherweight action, Ramla Ali (7-0, 2 KO) made history when she knocked out Crystal Garcia (10-3, 10 KO) in the first round in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as the Ali-Garcia Nova fight was the first female pro boxing match in the country.

Ali said after the fight she wants to take a break — she’s been dealing with a fractured toe and has fought twice in two months on it — but don’t be shocked if she returns to the ring before the end of the year or early in 2023. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said on the telecast he envisions Ali getting a title shot at some point next year.

Junior bantamweight is one division in women’s boxing where there is real intriguing depth outside ESPN’s Top 5 and title holders, including Ali, Ellie Scotney of Great Britain and Phannarai Netisri — all of whom are undefeated.

This weekend, Raquel Miller (11-0, 4 KO), ESPN’s No. 5 middleweight, will make her first appearance on 2022, this time at super middleweight when she faces Irais Hernandez (4-4-2, 3 KO) on Saturday at Smith Park in Pico Rivera, California.

Miller, in 2019, was the WBA’s interim junior middleweight champion.

In a card with multiple women’s fights put on by Debbie King in Warren, Ohio, ESPN’s No. 4 heavyweight, Seini Draughn (4-0-1, 3 KO) will fight for the first time in 2022 against Carlette Ewell (16-10-1, 9 KO), who hasn’t fought since 2019. Undefeated Tiara Brown (12-0, 8 KO) will fight a six-round featherweight contest against Calista Silgado (20-14-3, 15 KO) on the same card.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and quality of opponent. As with almost everything until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
