Chelsea draw up Aurelien Tchouameni transfer plan amid ‘expectations’ over Blues trio | Football | Sport

Chelsea are planning to explore the possibility of a January move for Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, according to reports. The Blues have been linked with a move for the 21-year-old since the end of last season, with Thomas Tuchel said to be keen on strengthening his ranks in the middle of the park.

Chelsea were credited with a desire to land Tchouameni over the summer but ultimately ended up striking a last-minute loan deal for Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid.

However, the Spaniard has failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge and is unlikely to be picked up on a permanent basis at the end of his temporary stay in London.

The Blues also have a number of players who will be out of contract in the near future, with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante set to become free agents in the summer of 2023 as things stand.

It seems as though Tchouameni, who has established himself as a regular at international level with France in recent months, could already be lined up to replace either of the aforementioned pair ahead of next season.

Chelsea will look at the option of striking a deal for Tchouameni even if they are prevented from making a January move for his services, according to Eurosport.

The report claims that Chelsea’s interest stems from their internal ‘expectation’ that at least one of Jorginho, Kante and Mateo Kovacic will leave Stamford Bridge over the next 12 months.

The Blues have also been keeping tabs on the likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham as of late, but Tchouameni appears to be the name at the top of their January shortlist at present.

He has emerged as one of Europe’s finest young deep-lying midfielders in recent years and there is a belief that a deal could be done when the transfer window opens next month.

Chelsea are also said to retain a keen interest in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, with the European champions set to weigh up moves for both players at the turn of the year.

DON’T MISS

It remains to be seen whether they will be successful in the event of a move for Tchouameni, who has played a key role for Monaco since the beginning of the campaign.

Club director Paul Mitchell recently warned Chelsea that only a huge-money bid would stand any chance of being accepted if they decide to act on their interest in the player in the near future.

“He is a complete midfielder, very fast and physically strong, he reminds me of Steven Gerrard,” said Mitchell when quizzed on Tchouameni’s situation earlier this month.

“He is already a top player despite being only 22, but if we want to become a top club, then we should not sell him.

“We are an ambitious club. Everyone, from President Rybolovlev to coach Niko Kovac is ambitious here.

“However, we’ll assess the situation at the end of the season. The player is under contract until 2024 and his transfer value is the one of a top player.

“Everything is expensive in Monte Carlo, let’s say that Tchouameni is as expensive as the Grand Casino.”
