Sadio Mane is set to secure his Liverpool exit after bosses rejected his contract demand as Jurgen Klopp opts against following Steven Gerrard’s transfer advice
Liverpool chiefs rejected Sadio Mane’s contract demand prior to his move to Bayern Munich.
The Senegal ace is due to complete his move to Germany in a deal worth £35.1million after the Reds chose to part ways with one of their star players. It came with the club unable to agree terms on a new contract with Mane, whose deal was due to expire in a year’s time, after rejecting his pay demands.
Meanwhile Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is set to ignore Steven Gerrard’s transfer advice and opt against adding another midfielder to his first-team squad this summer. And Jay Spearing is set to rejoin his old club as an overage player for the Reds’ under-23 side.
Here are Mirror Football’s latest Liverpool headlines.
Mane’s contract demand rejected
Liverpool refused to make Sadio Mane their highest-paid player during contract negotiations with the forward.
Mane has agreed to join German giants Bayern Munich and is now set to undergo a medical ahead of a £35.1m move. The Senegal international had just a year left on his contract at Anfield meaning they were backed into something of a corner in having to sell.
But Mane had demanded to become the club’s top earner in contract negotiations, which Reds chiefs refused to agree to. Ot would have meant breaking the club’s wage structure in order to keep hold of Mane, who turned 30 in April.
Gerrard’s advice to be ignored
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to ignore Steven Gerrard’s transfer advice and opt against bringing in a new midfielder this summer.
Reds legend Steven Gerrard had warned that a goal-scoring midfielder is needed this summer to ease the burden on the club’s attacking contingent. Klopp had targeted a new midfielder as he made a big push to bring in Aurelien Tchouameni from AS Monaco, although the French midfielder ultimately chose to move to Real Madrid instead.
But it appears the Reds are happy to wait until next summer to move for their back-up target as they aim to complete their summer transfer business in the coming days.
Spearing to rejoin Reds
Jay Spearing could return to sign for Liverpool once again as an overage player for the under-23 side.
The midfielder is a free agent after being released by Tranmere Rovers with reports suggesting he is “close” to a Liverpool return. Spearing made his debut for the Reds in 2008 under Rafa Benitez but could now be in line to help others achieve the same goal as he eyes a dual role as a coach for the academy’s younger age groups.
