Man Utd make Sergio Romero transfer decision amid stand-off

2 min read

Manchester United are prepared to sell Sergio Romero in January for half of what they were demanding in the summer.

The Argentine goalkeeper was seeking an Old Trafford exit once Dean Henderson returned and relegated him to third choice.

United wanted £5m for Romero but no club was prepared to meet that valution.

It meant the shot stopper had to stay put which bought about an angry reaction from him and his wife.

Romero’s contract is winding down, but United have threatened to trigger a contract extension clause in his deal as they hold out for their asking price.

Currently the Red Devils pay weekly wages of £575,000 to goalkeepers having dished out lucrative deals to De Gea and Henderson in recent times.

But the Red Devils could now accept as little as £2.5m for the 33-year-old who has been left out of their Premier League and Champions League squads.

Romero made 17 appearances in all competitions last term but hasn’t got a look in this term.

He joined United in 2015 when Louis van Gaal was in charge but has never been able to usurp De Gea as No 1.

As a result he has made just seven Premier League appearances with the majority of his outings coming in cup competitions.

The Argentine has Dean Henderson and David De Gea ahead of him in the pecking order

Romero was linked with both Leeds and Everton in the summer, but whether interest still exists from either club remains to be seen.

The Whites recently signed Illan Meslier on a permanent basis.

Everton have England No 1 Jordan Pickford, who has made several high profile errors already this season.

Carlo Ancelotti left him out for their recent game at Newcastle, but has since restored him to the starting XI.
