Ralf Rangnick previews Newcastle United clash

Christmas Day is here and that means only one thing – the January transfer window opens in a just one week.

While Manchester United are aiming to get their campaign back up and running by recovering from their Covid-19 outbreak, interim manager Ralf Rangnick is also readying to do deals next month.

The Red Devils have been linked with countless names already, including Leeds United and England star Kalvin Phillips.

But United appear to have a contingency plan if they are to miss out on the defensive midfielder, with Rangnick hoping to make use his long list of contacts.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest gossip from Old Trafford.

Phillips has been linked with Man Utd

Phillips’ firm response

Following multiple reports of interest from the Red Devils, Leeds fan favourite Kalvin Phillips has now directly responded to talk of a move to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old starred for England during Euro 2020 this summer, catching the attention of United, who have also been linked with his Three Lions team-mate, Declan Rice.

But Phillips appears to be happy at his boyhood club, who are facing relegation back down to the Championship after a shaky first half of the season.

“I speak to the owner regularly,” he told The Mail. “I want a new contract. I’m very happy here.”

Given the defensive midfielder’s stance, Rangnick and co will have seek out alternatives – something the Red Devils’ temporary boss has reportedly already been doing.

Midfield alternative eyed

With Phillips potentially out of the equation, United’s alternative target could well fix two problem positions.

The Athletic claim that Rangnick is now considering a swoop for United States international Tyler Adams, who is capable of playing in both midfield and at right-back, as demonstrated in two-and-a-half years with RB Leipzig.

Chris Armas, who was recently appointed No.2 at Old Trafford, is labelled as a big fan of Adams, having worked with him at their former club, New York Red Bulls.

The 22-year-old has been in Germany since 2019 and helped Leipzig reach the Champions League semi-finals in his first term by scoring against Atletico Madrid in the quarters.

Target sent warning

Red Devils target Julian Alvarez has been urged to be patient and wait a whole year for a move to Europe by former River Plate president Rodolfo D’Onofrio.

The 21-year-old recently emerged as a target for United, having scored 18 goals as the Argentine giants won the Primera Division title last time out.

Reports have indicated that Alvarez could be available for just £17million, but D’Onofrio says the hotshot should have the 2022 World Cup in mind, believing that staying in Buenos Aires would boost his chances of representing Argentina next winter.

“If he goes to Europe, acclimatization and everything that happens with the players, he is going to miss the World Cup,” D’Onofrio told TNT Sports , as reported by El Litoral.
